From “I Don’t Know” to a New Beginning: A $17,500 Scholarship Opens a Career Pathway
Sometimes the first step toward a young person’s future is helping them believe they have one.
When we first met this young woman, conversations about her future were difficult. As a high school senior navigating challenging circumstances, she was hesitant to dream beyond what was immediately in front of her.
During career exploration, we introduced her to different professions and employment pathways. We asked questions about what interested her, what she could see herself doing, and what kind of future she wanted to build.
Nothing seemed to connect.
The traditional career options we discussed simply did not excite her. Then, during one of our conversations, she mentioned something different:
She loved doing hair.
That small piece of information changed the direction of the conversation.
Finding Something That Felt Like Her
Instead of trying to fit her into a career pathway that did not interest her, we listened.
Her interest in hair opened the door to exploring cosmetology as a real profession—one that could lead to licensure, employment, entrepreneurship, and greater economic independence.
We arranged an opportunity for her to tour a cosmetology school.
The difference was noticeable.
For the first time during our career exploration, she was walking through a place connected to something she genuinely enjoyed. She could see the environment, learn more about the profession, and begin imagining herself there.
She felt like she belonged.
And that mattered.
Young people are often asked, “What do you want to be?” But sometimes they need experiences, relationships, and exposure before they can begin answering that question for themselves.
A $17,500 Investment in Her Future
What began as a conversation about something she enjoyed eventually became a tangible opportunity.
Through our partnership with Nail Technology Training and Educational Center, we were honored to award this young woman a full-ride scholarship valued at $17,500 to pursue professional training and work toward licensure in cosmetology.
As a high school senior, she now has a career pathway waiting for her as she prepares for her next chapter.
We weren't simply celebrating a scholarship that day.
We were celebrating a new beginning.
A financial barrier had been removed. An interest had become a possibility. And a young woman who once struggled to imagine what came next now had something concrete to work toward.
This Is Why Partnerships Matter
CFFYD cannot create every opportunity a young person needs on our own—and we shouldn't have to.
Community impact happens when organizations are willing to bring what they have to the table.
Our partnership with Nail Technology Training and Educational Center allowed us to connect career exploration with an actual pathway forward.
This is the kind of partnership we want to continue building: not simply exposing young people to possibilities, but helping remove the barriers standing between them and those possibilities.
More Than a Scholarship
This experience also reinforced something important about the young people we serve.
A young person who doesn't immediately have an answer about their future does not necessarily lack ambition or potential. Sometimes they simply haven't discovered the opportunity that makes the future feel relevant to them yet.
That is why exposure matters.
That is why listening matters.
And that is why access matters.
For this young woman, it started with a simple admission that she loved doing hair. It led to a school tour, a career pathway, and ultimately a $17,500 investment in her future.
We are incredibly proud to celebrate her as she takes this next step, and we look forward to walking alongside her as she works toward becoming a licensed professional and building a future of her own choosing.
This is just the beginning.
