Career Pathways & Resource Expo: Turning Opportunity Into Action

More than 30 career, education, training, and community opportunities were brought together in one place—but the most exciting part was watching young adults learn how to confidently pursue them.

At the Center for Fatherless Youth Development, we believe exposure matters. Young people need opportunities to discover careers, meet professionals, learn about educational and training pathways, and understand the resources available to them.

But exposure alone isn't enough.

Our Career Pathways & Resource Expo was designed to help young adults move from simply hearing about opportunities to knowing how to introduce themselves, build professional relationships, set goals, and take their next step.

And watching that happen in real time was one of the most rewarding parts of the day.

From Practicing to Doing

One of our favorite activities focused on something that can feel intimidating at any age: walking up to someone you don't know and confidently introducing yourself.

Participants practiced how to introduce themselves, communicate their interests, ask thoughtful questions, and begin building professional relationships.

Then came the best part.

They immediately had an opportunity to put those skills into practice.

Throughout the Expo, we watched participants approach our opportunity partners, introduce themselves with confidence, ask questions, exchange information, and have conversations about their futures.

The transition from learning a skill to immediately using it was powerful to witness.

This is what community impact looks like.

It isn't simply putting resources in a room. It is helping a young person develop the confidence and skills to access those resources for themselves—and surrounding them with people willing to open doors.

More Than 30 Opportunities Under One Roof

Thanks to the collective efforts of our community partners, volunteers, mentors, and supporters, participants were introduced to more than 30 career, educational, training, and community opportunities.

They had the chance to speak directly with professionals and organizations, ask questions, explore different pathways, and begin developing connections that could extend well beyond the Expo.

Through Charity's Closet, we also distributed 27 interview and workplace-ready clothing items, helping participants prepare not only for where they want to go, but for the opportunities that may come next.

By the end of the event, three young adults had been connected with new professional mentors.

Those relationships were especially meaningful to us. Sometimes access to the right person, guidance, or introduction can help a young person see possibilities they did not know existed.

Turning Five-Year Goals Into Next Steps

We also wanted to make sure participants didn't leave carrying a bag full of brochures and business cards without knowing what to do next.

Each young adult received a goal-setting worksheet to use throughout the Expo.

Participants were challenged to think seriously about where they saw themselves in five years and then work backward to identify what it would take to get there.

They documented important takeaways from the day, professional contacts and resources they wanted to remember, and the credentials, education, training, licenses, grades, or other requirements that could be necessary to reach their goals.

Most importantly, they were asked one practical question:

What is one thing you can do within the next two days to better prepare for your future?

That question brought the future back to the present.

A five-year goal can feel distant. One phone call, application, email, introduction, or conversation within the next 48 hours is something a young person can act on now.

By the end of the Expo, three participants left with five-year plans and actionable next steps for their futures.

This Is Community Impact

The numbers tell part of the story:

30+ career, educational, training, and community opportunities presented.

27 interview and workplace-ready clothing items distributed.

3 new professional mentoring connections established.

3 participants with five-year plans ready to put into action.

But behind every number was a young person making a connection, asking a question, considering a new possibility, or becoming a little more prepared to navigate what comes next.

That is why partnerships matter.

No single organization can provide every opportunity a young person will need. But when employers, educators, community organizations, mentors, volunteers, and caring adults bring their knowledge and resources together, we can create something much more valuable: a network of people invested in helping young adults move forward.

We are incredibly grateful to every organization and individual who helped make the Career Pathways & Resource Expo possible.

Exposure creates possibilities. Preparation builds confidence. Relationships open doors. And action moves a young person forward.

There are many more possibilities ahead.
